The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal. The region is divided into 16 municipalities:
Albufeira, Alcoutim, Aljezur, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, Loulé, Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, São Brás de Alportel, Silves, Tavira, Vila do Bispo and Vila Real de Santo António.
Since the 1960’s, The Algarve has been, and still is, a popular holiday destination, during the summer the tourists flock in and the locals thrive on it.
The main reason that so many people visit The Algarve: the beaches!
Mile upon mile of south-facing coastline, offer many glorious beaches and limestone grottos and caves. The beach at Praia da Marinha in Lagos was classified as one of the 100 most beautiful and well-preserved beaches in the world.
These days, The Algarve not only attracts sun worshippers, but golfers too! The Minister of Economy, Manuel Pinho has invested into the creation of a network of golf courses.
There’s plenty to do and see in The Algarve. The region not only offers visitors the sun and sandy beaches, but also sports, adventure, nature and beautiful landscapes. All you have to do is open your eyes!
Many tourists fall in love with The Algarve and decide to stay there. Portugal is part of the European Union, and as EU Citizens have the right to freely buy property and reside in Portugal, many English-speaking communities are popping up throughout the region.
